Fundraiser of the Year 2018

The Fundraiser of the Year Award recognises the individual who has ‘gone above and beyond’ to raise funds and/or awareness for Parkinson’s. This year we are delighted to announce Tim Daber from Northamptonshire as this year’s recipient. Tim’s extraordinary year of fundraising, which culminated in a 64 mile walk around the North Norfolk coastline, has raised over £76,000 for Cure Parkinson’s.

Tim Daber was diagnosed with Parkinson’s just over two years ago, as he approached his 60th birthday. Inspired by a professor who suggested that a cure for Parkinson’s was within reach if more funding was invested in research, Tim set about planning an incredible year of raising funds and awareness to help make this a reality.

Tim’s campaign began with a launch party in February, which raised over £15,000. Over the coming months Tim planned and executed a series of events including a wine-tasting evening, tennis club quiz night and the Oundle Classic Bike Rally. However, the biggest challenge was still to come: walking 64 miles round the North Norfolk coastline in just four days.

Tim named the walk ‘the 60/60 challenge,’ to mark both his 60th birthday and the 60 plus miles he and his team would be covering. Setting off from Sea Palling (pictured above), and battling humid afternoons, tired legs and miles of shingle, they crossed the finish line at Hunstanton’s ‘Tennis Week’ event, where Cure Parkinson’s had been generously nominated as their charity of the year.

“I have just been blown away by the generosity shown to us. The walk has been a humbling and emotional experience. The team members met many people along the way whose lives had been touched by Parkinson’s and who gave so generously. I feel some amount of pride in raising a substantial sum but at the same time I am humbled by the faith that all my supporters had in me. I cannot stress highly enough that this was a real team effort from start to finish. I may have ended the walk but the strength of purpose this endeavour has given me, to do something about my condition, will undoubtedly lead to a new beginning – my family is already talking about the next project with me!”

Tim has not only raised an incredible amount which will be directed towards CPT’s international Linked Clinical Trials programme, but throughout his year-long campaign he has gone above and beyond to raise awareness of the condition. CPT’s CEO, Will Cook said:
