About Parkinson’s
- Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition characterised by tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement and balance problems, but not everyone will experience all of these.
- Parkinson’s can cause a wide range of symptoms including chronic pain, sleep disturbance, constipation, memory concerns, anxiety and depression; all of which can significantly impact an individual’s day-to day life and make everyday tasks like getting dressed in the morning, using a phone, or eating, very difficult.
- People with Parkinson’s still rely on the same treatments that were available in the 1960s, and these can only mask symptoms, they do not halt the progression of the condition.
Key facts

Cure Parkinson’s impact
- Cure Parkinson’s wants to bring more drugs to clinical trial, and test more treatments, so we can get to the cure faster. We want to change the future for people living with Parkinson’s.
- Since 2005, Cure Parkinson’s has committed more than £25m of funding for Parkinson’s research, into over 80 separate research projects.
- Cure Parkinson’s set up the International Linked Clinical trials (iLCT) programme in an effort to speed up the search for disease-modifying treatments for Parkinson’s. This includes establishing the iLCT committee, comprised of over 20 world-leading Parkinson’s experts who evaluate, rank and prioritise new and existing treatments with the potential to modify the progression of the condition.
- About 30% of all potentially disease modifying treatments for Parkinson’s in active clinical trial up until 31 January 2024 have been evaluated by Cure Parkinson’s iLCT committee.
