Cure Parkinson’s supporters take on 500km charity bike ride to raise funds and awareness for our research, with the team raising more than £31k for us!

Brothers Max and Joe, and brother-in-law Paddy, organised this epic bike ride from Peckham, London to Penzance, Cornwall to raise vital funds and awareness for us.

Cure Parkinson’s is a charity close to their hearts as Max and Joe’s mum, Lucy, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012. Max, Joe and Paddy all find Lucy’s approach towards living with the condition truly inspirational, so were determined to help support our search for a cure with an exceptional challenge.

The trio were joined by friends and family on this ambitious challenge, all willing to don their lycra and pedal all the way to Penzance to raise valuable funds in support of our research. The day before they set off, Joe, Max and Paddy said:

“There is a mixture of excitement and nerves. After a lot of planning we just want to get on the road and get going.

We are all repeatedly checking the weather forecast and it looks like we will get a bit of everything en route, but we’re remaining very optimistic that it’ll be great fun as we have a top group of cyclists assembled who all want to do their bit for this fantastic charity.”

Prior to setting off, most of the team were novice cyclists and, after a couple of training sessions, became aware of just how daunting their challenge was going to be –  especially once the route hit Dartmoor National Park! But the team set their nerves aside and powered through, completing the challenge in four days. They even surpassed their impressive fundraising target of £20,000 before they set off, too! Before the big challenge Joe, Max and Paddy commented:

“We really believe there will be a cure found in our lifetime, so it’s important to do our bit in any way we can. We have had over £20k in donations so far, from over 300 people which is incredibly generous and we hope to raise a lot more during the ride.”
