How are we closer to the cure this month?
In April 2020, a research group in Shanghai (China), demonstrated that by reducing levels of a single protein in one type of helper cell - the astrocytes - they were able to encourage astrocytes to become neurons. In addition, they found that in mouse models of Parkinson's, those converted astrocytes then went on to become dopamine neurons specifically.
Stopping disease progressionStopping dopamine neuron degeneration by preventing Alpha-synuclein redistribution
Professor Spillantini and the team at Cambridge university believe that reducing the clumps of alpha-synuclein and restoring normal distribution in nerve endings will reinstate the typical release of dopamine and normal communication between the neurons, thereby reducing the clinical symptoms of Parkinson’s.
