** Please note this event has been postponed ** Unfortunately due to COVID-19 and the restrictions in place, Peter and Vicky have been forced to postpone the Solent Swim Challenge and Pool Swim events originally planned for July. They are looking to reschedule the events to September, but that is going to be dependant on how the situation develops over the coming weeks. Thank you for your understanding and support.
On 12 July 2020, Peter Burns and Vicky Knight will be taking on the fantastic Positively Parkinson’s Swim challenge raising funds and awareness for The Cure Parkinson’s Trust’s (CPT) pioneering Parkinson’s research.
Starting at Gosport in Hampshire, 12 swimmers will be swimming 5,000 meters across the Solent river finishing in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The team will be made up of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease together with their friends and family.
In addition to this fantastic challenge, Peter and Vicky are encouraging fellow fundraisers and swimming enthusiasts to get involved with ‘Pool Swim’, taking place across the whole month of July. Participants are encouraged to swim a total length of 5,000 meters (200 lengths of a 25m pool) in their local swimming pool to get active and help raise awareness and funds for CPT. The distance can be completed at the individual’s convenience.
The idea for Positively Parkinson’s came from a Parkinson’s awareness event held last year celebrating carrying a positive attitude and rising to new challenges.
Vicky, who specialises in rehabilitation for neurological conditions, speaks about the power of exercise for PWPs:
“To compliment medication, exercise plays a key part in an individual’s management plan, which encourages determination through being active, confident, empowered and positive. We are becoming increasingly aware of how important exercise is in managing Parkinson’s and how it is never too late to start exercising.”
Peter Burns said:
“Teaming up with The Cure Parkinson’s Trust was a logical partnership and from the very beginning we were impressed by their can do attitude, plus the fact that several of the management had been diagnosed with PD, so they are very much in tune with the condition.”
All at CPT would like to say a huge thank you to Peter and Vicky for their inspiring fundraising efforts. Making your challenge accessible to all is a great way to spread a positive ‘can-do’ attitude towards a new challenge!
